A few years back, I brought my boys a Subaru rally scalextric set for Christmas. After a couple of plays with it, it ended up under the bed. As we do, I searched through e bay and brought a leyland truck, an Escort and a Focus police car to go with the set. Anyway, I asked them last night if they wanted to play Scalextric. One was on his I pod and the other was on his lap top. As you can imagine, that was a big fat no, so I decided to set it up and play myself. Well after getting up and sticking the car back on the track 25 odd times, I realised it really isn't as fun as when I was ten and had the stock car set. It seems kids aren't that enthusiastic these days either. Is scalextrics number up?

I think its like that across the board, kids don't want to do anything unless its sat behind a screen or plugged into something.
I think one problem is a lot of kids are just pushed brands and aren't encouraged to use their imagination anymore. Me and my other half went into toys r us the other day looking for some good activity books ( as he actually enjoys them) for the nephew and found nothing, and we were surprised how low quality most of the stuff was.
I still have a mighty metros set that I got about age 10, and loads of extra track and think occasionally about setting up then I get told to stop being a child!

Its the way of the world now i'm afraid. When was the last time you seen kids out building dams go carts or climbing trees. My kids will sit in there rooms all day on their interest games, If i try and evict them i just get greife of the wife. I she thinks there like aspirins and would dissolve in the rain.

Although I suspect Scalextric is not so popular with young'uns anymore there is still a loyal following from the more mature crowd!
That's not to say Scalextric is the preserve of older people now it just seems that younger people are interested in different things...
I still have loads of old Scalextric stuff and I vow to set it up some day soon!

My son only played with the Scalextric bought for Xmas a few times as he simply wasn't interested and, as people say, simply went back to his Sega (he's now 29 so it's a few years ago !). Personally I had a Polistil set up bought me by my wife 33 years ago for one Xmas when I was 23 and still have it. Friends used to come around together with a few cans and we'd have "race nights". Might get it out for a play later to relive the fun.

I aquired a lot of Micro Scalextric a few years ago and set up a floor filling circuit in a spare bedroom. After 10 minutes, it was taken apart and listed on eBay (nice little earner). Why? The cars were ultra magnetised and never came off the track, a lap took no more than four seconds. Dull.
The full size version seemed equally frustrating when the cars used to come off at the merest hint of an unbanked curve. Seeing a Mini 1275GT barrel rolling under the sofa for the umpteenth time got really frustrating.

My son (3) loves his little set from a car boot but does get annoyed with constantly putting them back on and dirty contacts etc (mumbling silly car under his breath).
Sadly I think kids today find 15 minutes of setting up and taking down, for an hours entertainment (at best) is a poor payback.

I think part of the problem with Salextric, and indeed any railway or track based 'toy' is that people don't have the space to put them up and leave them up. For my sins I have always been into it since a very small boy, my boys are into it as is my daughter (which is nice). At one stage I had close to 200 cars, huge amounts of track, pits, grandstands, people the whole 9 yards. Managed to get it under control now and specialise in Porsche, Can Am cars, GT40's and 60's era Ferrari. Still have a whole bunch of truck, muscle cars 70's touring cars etc so thinking about it, probably still not under control.... Anyway, a pic of a small part of my collection for your delight and edification. P.

My little girl loves it when I get the set out. She is 4 it helps it's one of the drift ones so the cars hardly come off increasing the enjoyment she gets

Agree with a lot of what's been said, it does keep kids attention, but not long enough! The prices are getting silly and it's expensive to build a good set up! Even i've calmed down how many I buy now because the prices are crazy! The Adult market is still strong however! It also takes up way too much space and takes much longer to set up than an Xbox, action is limited and usually ends up in someone having to get off their backside to go fetch a car out of the dogs backside! I'm debating selling all mine off if i thought it would be worth anything! I tend to enjoy collecting more than racing, although there are some laughs still to be had, but my self i'd sooner fire up the PS2 and stick "Driven to destruction" in. 3 year old pic of my collection, about 50-70 cars stronger than that now:

I've just put in a "Parent Forum" (some extra finding supplied by the PTA) bid for two class sets of "Scalextric in Schools kits. These are a pack of motor, gears, front and rear axles and wheels for a Scalextric car. The students will e tasked with designing a chassis (probably lazy cut acrylic) and body shell (construction of a former then vac formed). These will then be built and raced internally before the best of the two classes are selected to go to the national or regional competition. www.scalextric.com/scalextric-4-schools/I'm expecting this sort of thing, but with children - who knows!

We gotten loads of scalextric track in our skips, kids want instant gratificaction these days, the thought of spending time setting up, playing for an hour, then having to put it all away afterwards might have something to do with it.

A few years back, I brought my boys a Subaru rally scalextric set for Christmas. Snap, in fact I set mine up in the attic and when reroofing my house last year I suddenly remembered it, then went for a look and found it still set up,but the guys who insulated the loft had simply insulated over the top of it. Mine is the Colin McRae edition,my kids have left home now,but I'm tempted to dig it out of the loft and set it up in the spare room.

I must disagree with many of the thoughts here. Literally, only this morning I was awoken by my two kids (Boy 10, girl 12) building a new track layout out of my sons room, across the landing and onto the stairs (I had to call time on the stairs bit)
I bought my son a metric load of 'classic' scalextrix (i feel it's more 'flexible') for his last birthday and christmas, and it's still as popular with him now as it was then. He even asked me for more cars for this coming christmas
He (and to some extent, my daughter) take genuine pleasure in building the track, as much as racing on it
